Alice Margaret Leech Hazel, age 91 passed away in her Paris home on Saturday, November 7, 2020. Originally from the Levi Community in Memphis, Tennessee; she met and subsequently married her childhood sweetheart, the late Warren Nelson Hazel (Major, Retired United States Air Force). Upon his retirement, the family moved to Paris in 1968 and settled on Springhill Road.
She led a rich life, traveled the U.S. and abroad. During her travels, she studied painting while living in France. She was an accomplished artist commissioned by First Lady Honey Alexander (U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander) to curate Tennessee Artisans` work to decorate the Governors Mansion at Christmas. Locally, she served her friends, family, and community with excellence volunteering with many organizations, charities, and the United Methodist Church.
Alice is survived by her four remaining children, Leesha Hazel, Ray Hazel, Michael Hazel, and Terry Phillips (and husband Ray); six grandchildren, Elizabeth Hazel (and husband Sam Conte), Peter Hazel (and wife Nicole), Shauna Hughes (and husband John), Katie Hazel, Andrea Hazel and Jonathan Hazel; five step grandchildren, Alexander, Andrew, Adam, Aliah and Autumn George; and four great grandchildren, Abigail George, Angelina George, Romona Conte and Ava Hazel. Her oldest son, Robert Hazel preceded her in July survived by his wife, Betty ODea.
Per her wishes, Alice will be cremated by McEvoy Funeral Home. A grave marker will be placed alongside her late husbands at Stephenson Chapel Cemetery (Memphis), adjacent to the Methodist Church her family founded in the 19th Century. The family will hold a small, private gathering at a later date.
