Barbara Jean Simmons Smyth, of Athens and Paris, TN, passed away on January 30, 2014. She was 87.
Born in New Providence, KY to Orval and Maybelle Simmons, Barbara and her family moved to Paris in 1936, where her parents owned Simmons Dairy and her father was part owner of Paris Livestock Co. Barbara attended Grove High School and graduated in 1944 as valedictorian. She was a journalism and English major at Murray State before stopping to help out with the office work at the dairy. She continued there after the companys acquisition by Smyth Dairy of Cottage Grove, and consolidation into Paris Dairy. She and the owners son, Marvin, married in 1947 and continued to operate the dairy until its sale in 1965.
Following the sale of the dairy, and after working for several years at Paris Insurance Agency, Barbara began as a teller at Paris Federal Savings. She advanced to become an assistant vice president at Liberty Federal Savings Bank and retired from Union Planters after more than 22 years in the banking industry. After retirement, she put her knowledge of banking and business to work through her volunteer efforts with SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives).
Barbara was an active member of the Quota Club for more than 35 years, serving as club president, District Governor and South Area Director of Quota International. She was a volunteer at the Heritage Center and was an officer and a member of the board of the Lee School Association. She was a longtime and active member of the East Wood Church of Christ.
Barbara was predeceased by her husband Marvin in 1984. She is survived by her six children: Carol Walden (David) of Athens, TN; Don (Suzanne) of Etowah, NC; Kent (Vanessa) of Dickson, TN; Mark (Lynnette) of Barnesville, GA; Nancy of Nashville, TN; David (Larry Zimmermann) of Maplewood, NJ; six grandchildren: Matthew Walden (Kristine) of Athens, TN; Jennifer Kittles (Damon) of Asheville, NC; Jessica Smyth (Roxanna Ramirez) of San Antonio, TX; Evan Walden (Kari) of Athens, TN; Andrew Smyth of Tallahassee, FL and Patrick Smyth (Leigh Anna) of Atlanta, GA; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Monday, February 3rd at 11:00 at McEvoy Funeral Home. Visitation will be Sunday, February 2nd, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Service will be conducted by Brother John Dale. Interment will be held at Walker Cemetery
