Belle Harper McFadden, age 84, was born November 9, 1935, in Friendship, Tennessee, and lived her childhood years in Mason Hall, Tennessee. She graduated in a high school class of eleven students and moved to Nashville for work and to attend Belmont College. In 1957, she met and married John J. Harris, Sr., M.D. and discontinued her own education while working to support her husband through college and medical school. During these years, three children were born. She divorced in 1968 and, remaining in Nashville, worked very diligently to provide for her children, routinely emphasizing education, hard work, church involvement, and extracurricular activities. While working and raising three children alone, she graduated with honors from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University in 1975 and achieved great success in real estate. She was named Nashville Realtor of the Month several times and relished helping others find their dream home. Belle was a talented self-taught interior decorator, and she was known for her excellent aesthetic tastes in art and fashion. Having grown up with little money and raising three children on a shoe-string budget, she loved helping others decorate their homes on meager budgets. As well, she worked tirelessly to turn her own home into a showplace where people loved to spend time. Belle was a life-long lover of reading, and no matter where she lived, there were always stacks of books, including many different types of Bibles, around her home. She was a dedicated Christian, a member of St. Bartholomews Episcopal Church in Nashville for over forty years, and one of the first women to serve on the churchs Vestry committee. In 1986, Belle married the love of her life, Everett W. McFadden, Jr. Together, they traveled extensively and regularly entertained family and friends in their lovely home in south Nashville until his death in 2008. Belle and Everettes marriage also served as a vehicle for them both to deepen their faith, something they both acknowledged with gratitude. Belle loved Everette very deeply, and their marriage lasted almost twenty-three years until his death. It is perhaps poetic that Belle died on December 3rd, the same day that Everette died eleven years prior. She is preceded in death by her husband, Everette McFadden, Jr., and her sister, Dorothy Pierce. She is survived by her three children, John J. Harris, Jr., M.D.; Laura Harris James (Doug); and Peter R. Harris, Ph.D. (Lisa); as well as six grandchildren, Aaron Harris, Ella James, Joel James, Amelia Harris, Joshua Harris, and Leo Harris. Visitation will be Saturday, December 7, 2019, from 12:00-1:00 pm at McEvoy Funeral Home in Paris, Tennessee. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 pm with Rev. Craig B. Valentine officiating. Interment will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Paris. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Alive Hospice, 1710 Patterson Street, Nashville, TN 37203-2926.
