Bette Alexander Brewer, age 93 of Paris passed away Tuesday, December 17, 2019 at Henry County Medical Center. Her funeral service will be 2:00 PM Saturday, December 28, 2019 at McEvoy Funeral Home with Dr. Trent Bullock of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00-2:00 PM Saturday, December 28, 2019 at McEvoy Funeral Home prior to the service. Bette Alexander Brewer was born November 14, 1926 in Paris, Tennessee to the late Marquis L. Alexander Sr., and the late Lillian Spaulding Alexander. On August 21, 1948 she married David Julian Brewer and he preceded her in death on February 3, 2011. Ms. Brewer is survived by her son, Webb Alexander Brewer of Memphis; sister, Joyce Reedy of Clearwater, FL; brother, Marquis Alexander, Jr., of Houston, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Besides her parents and husband, Ms. Brewer was also preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Turner; and a brother, Arthur Alexander. Bette Alexander Brewer graduated from E.W. Grove High School in 1943. She was a member of the basketball team and involved in many civic and social activities, where her giving and outgoing personality were put to good use. As a teenager, during WWII, she worked in the Commissary at Camp Tyson where some of her experiences were chronicled in the book Camp Tyson by Shannon McFarlin. After high school she attended business college in Nashville, Tennessee where she was a roommate of the late Anna Belle Clement, the "First Lady of Tennessee", and sister of Frank G. Clement the well-known Governor of Tennessee. As a Relief Manager for Western Union during the war, she travelled the southeastern United States, managing Western Union offices on a temporary or relief basis. While on an assignment in West Tennessee, she delivered a message to the family of David Julian Brewer informing them that he had been wounded in the invasion of Iwo Jima. Although she had delivered many similar messages, this one stood out in her mind because of the way the recipient said it would break his mothers heart. Julian later accepted a teaching job at Grove High School and was her younger sister Joyces basketball coach. She soon realized that he was the young man to whose family she had delivered the message. They married on August 21, 1948 and remained so until his death in 2011. Always a career woman as well as a wife and mom, Mrs. Brewer worked at Southern Clay Company and Paris Insurance Agency. When her husband accepted the position as head of the Tennessee School Boards Association the family moved to Nashville, TN. While there, Bette was secretary to J. Franklin Paschall, the long-time pastor of First Baptist Church of Nashville and President of the Southern Baptist Convention. After the family returned to Paris, she became the bookkeeper at McCartney Produce Company and later was bookkeeper of Paris Country Club for a number of years, where she was also a longtime member. In addition, after retiring she began to work at the Paris-Henry County Historical Society as a volunteer. A devoted mother, wife, daughter, sister, and dear friend to many, Mrs. Brewer was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Paris where she sang alto in the choir and served on countless committees. She was also a long-time member and past president of the Janusette Delphian Club and an avid member of the Tennessee Federation of Womens Clubs. In addition to her keen intellect and business acumen, Bette had a poets soul. Her poem, "We Three-Tree, Seasons and Me," won the TFWCs statewide poetry contest in 1978. It was that spirit that guided her in her tender and undying care of her only child, Webb; her parents who lived at their home at 608 Spruce Street until their deaths in their mid-nineties; and her husband as his memory faded. She loved all her siblings, nieces and nephews and followed the lives of their children. Years ago she originated an annual Alexander Family Reunion, which endures today Her caregiving continued into her last years at Eiffel Gardens where she was a friend to all, especially Goldie the Labrador retriever whom she spoiled rotten with dog biscuits, and she always shared her beautiful smile with all. As her son, I am grateful to God for my mother and her life presence. "Servant of God, Well Done". Visitation McEvoy Funeral Home, Inc.
