Catherine (Katie) Jones Elovitz Smith passed away peacefully on November 1st, 2024. Katie was born on October 30, 1929, in Agra, Oklahoma, one day before the 1929 stock market collapse that began the Great Depression of the 1930s. Her early childhood was spent in the oil fields of western Oklahoma enduring the Dust Bowl period where she developed her fierce independence. She often recalled stories of climbing windmills and visiting stock tanks, both strictly forbidden by her mother and father. After high school, Katie attended secretarial school in Kansas City, Missouri where she met and married Joe Elovitz. Katie and Joe began their married lives in Paris, Kentucky where they had four children. Katie began her career at an insurance agency insuring racehorses. Katie and Joe moved to Paris, Tennessee in 1964 and opened Elovitz Jewelers, which they co-owned until their retirement in 1989. She has been a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church since moving to Paris, Tennessee in 1964. Katie often said her crowning achievement was putting her four children through college during that period of their lives. Joe preceded Katie in death in 2002, and in 2007 Katie met and married Dalton B. Smith of Clarksville, TN. Katie and Dalton traveled extensively during their years together. Katie and Daltons travels covered the northern hemisphere from the Panama Canal to St. Petersburg, Russia. Katie often spoke of the Amalfi Coast of Italy which held a special place in her heart as the most special place they ever visited. Dalton preceded Katie in death in 2021. Katie passed away at the Elovitz family home which the family has occupied since 1966. Katie is survived by four children: Cathy Hartmann of Flemington, NJ, Jan Cothron of Nashville, TN, Angie Holmes of Paris, TN and Jody Elovitz of Denver, CO. Katie has four grandchildren: Derek Hartmann, Tony Elovitz, Nick Elovitz, Clayton Holmes, and one great-grandchild: Sophia Hansen Elovitz. A memorial mass will be planned for a later date.
