Evelyn Kay Underwood of Marion, Iowa passed away Thursday, March 31, 2022 at Mercy Hospice in Hiawatha, Iowa. She was 80 years old.
Kay was born in Henry County, Tennessee on August 23, 1941 to Virginia Ann and Daron Weldon Gallimore. The second of four children, Kay was born across the street from the family home in what was affectionately called the "Hatching House" by her daddy. She remembered her childhood fondly, though her days were often filled with hard work, doing her part to help keep the farm running smoothly. She remembered that Saturday was "house cleaning" day which most of the time included a trip to town when the chores were finished. Kay's lifelong love of music and singing began when she was young and she performed in a singing group with her sister Carol and her cousin Rosan, known as The Gallimore Sisters.
In 1957 Kay married Hal Underwood. They were blessed with two daughters in the following years. Her life during this time, as always was characterized by her devotion to faith and family. When the girls were old enough, Kay followed her dream of becoming a nurse. She was dedicated to the patients she cared for, often staying late or coming in on her day off to give them special attention. She retired in 2004 and moved with Hal to Iowa in 2016 to be closer to some of her family.
Kay was affectionately known as Meme to her seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, who loved to visit her home. A visit always included a bright smile, warm hug of welcome, and lovely conversation. It would also often contain music or a game of Authors, Chinese Checkers, or Chickenfoot.
Kay is survived by her husband Hal Gordon Underwood of Marion, IA; her daughters Beverly Kay (Rick) Wade of Maryville, TN and Sheila Ann (Lindy) Carr of Marion, IA; her grandchildren Candace (Caleb) Buskohl, Jordan (Amanda) Carr, Wesley (Susan) Wade, Whitney (Jesse) Williams, Alyssa (Dawson) Medin, Sera Carr, and Ashli Carr; her great-grandchildren Lucas, Elijah, Annalee, Esther, Lyla, Simon, Eva, Evangeline, Lindyn, Talitha, and Leo; her sister Carol (Orvil) Orr of Puryear, TN; brothers Weldon (Gayneita) Gallimore of Puryear, TN and Byron (Missy) Gallimore of Thompson Station, TN; and many nieces and nephews.
