From the family of Mr. Monroe,
Our dad, James "Jim" Monroe, died January 5, 2024, at the age of 86 loved by family and friends alike. We will miss him and would like to tell you a bit about his well-lived life.
Born in 1937 in Oakwood, IL, Dad loved growing up on the farm surrounded by his siblings, farm animals, and beautiful landscape.
In his senior year of high school, he joined the Navy reserve and in 1955 started active duty in the South Pacific. The Navy afforded Dad an opportunity to see the world while proudly serving aboard the Knudson and the Colonial. His time on the Knudson was spent in support of Operation Redwing in the Marshall Islands and he celebrated crossing the international date line on March 5, 1957, while aboard the Colonial.
An enthusiastic traveler, Dad made several road trips to Colorado over the years to make the 20-mile trek up Pikes Peak, first with his young family so we could throw snowballs once at the top, then later astride his motorcycle with his long-time friends. In 2018 he was able to make one last trip up Pikes Peak, this time accompanied by his children and grandchildren.
Dad was often happiest when left to his own deviceswhether it was tinkering in his garage, working in his yard, or the discovery of a good book.
Memorial contributions can be made in his name to The Wounded Warrior Project or St. Jude Childrens research Hospital.
