Mai Woody Tant, 61, of Newburgh, Indiana, died on Wednesday, July 5, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born September 26, 1955, and grew up in Milan, Tennessee where she graduated from Milan High School in 1973.
She was a fun-loving, friendly person who always had a smile on her face and a song in her heart! She was an avid Alabama football fan. Mai graduated from the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, Memphis, Tennessee, in 1975. There she was loved by her classmates and won the Florence Nightingale Award.
Her nursing career spanned 40 years. She began at LeBonheur Children's Hospital. She loved children and her first nursing job. Mai worked with the Shelby County and the Gibson County Health Departments, both in Tennessee. She was also a nurse for the Richmond County Health Department in Augusta, Georgia. She worked at the Milan Hospital in Milan, Tennessee, and was a school nurse for Washington Middle School in Evansville, Indiana for 15 years. Mai also worked as an after-hours pediatric phone nurse for Deaconess Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana for 6 years. It was her lifelong desire to be a nurse, and she fulfilled that role in many capacities.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Becky and William Woody, both of Milan, Tennessee; and her father-in-law, Rev. Robert Tant, Sr. of Gadsden, Alabama.
Mai leaves her husband of 27 years, Rob Tant; and her son, Christian Harris Tant, both of Newburgh, Indiana; mother-in-law, Mrs. Becky Tant of Gadsden, Alabama; sisters, Suzanne Vance of Oregon and Frankie Woody Shoaf (Hedrick) of Medina, Tennessee; brother, Marvin Woody (Pat) of Edmond, Oklahoma; nephews, Brent Hendricks of Arkansas, Parker Bedwell of Selmer, Tennessee, Alex Woody of Columbus, Ohio, Nathan Woody of Seattle, Washington, Richard Tant, Jr. and Austin Tant of Phenix City, Alabama; nieces, Anna Grace Bedwell of Selmer, Tennessee, and Emma Shoaf of Nashville, Tennessee.
Funeral Services will be held at 5:00 PM Sunday, July 9, 2017, at Alexander Newburgh Chapel officiated by Rev. Chris Nunley. Friends may visit 2:00 PM until service time on Sunday at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, July 10, 2017, at Walker Cemetery in Paris, Tennessee officiated by Rev. Doy Daniels.
