Peggy Jane Dinwiddie Derrington passed away at the age of 90 in Warrensburg, MO on Sunday, May 5, 2024.
She was born March, 30, 1934, in Jackson, Tennessee, the daughter of Walter Curtis Dinwiddie, Jr. and Atha Priestly Carlton Dinwiddie. Growing up she attended more than nine different schools in five states, including four high schools. She held two degrees from the University of Memphis and a second graduate degree from George Peabody College, Vanderbilt University.
She was married to Horace R. Derrington, a long-time educator in Henry County, TN.
She taught school in the Memphis and Henry County, Tennessee school systems for a total of 42 years, retiring in 1998. She also taught part-time at the University of Tennessee, Martin in their library science program. Over the years she was active in a number of educational organizations, serving on accreditation boards for the Southern Association of College and Schools, and a member of the International Reading Association, the American Library Association, Beta Phi Mu Honorary Library Science organization, Alpha Delta Kappa teachers sorority, a lifetime member of the National Education Association, and a member of the Tennessee Education Association, Tennessee Retired Teachers, and Johnson County (MO) Retired Teachers.
She was active for many years in the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently earning her 50 year membership pin. She was a member of Chapter CB of the International Society of P.E.O, the ABC Club, and the Western Missouri Medical Center Auxiliary. She was a faithful member of the Warrensburg church of Christ.
Her interests included her family, reading, knitting, and crocheting. For many years she was an avid genealogist. She was an excellent crossword and Sudoku puzzle worker. She was a great lover of dogs and was especially devoted to her last two chihuahuas, Chico and Gizmo. She liked other peoples cats.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother, Grady Carlton Dinwiddie, and sister-in-law Adne Stewart Dinwiddie.
She is survived by her sister, Mollie M. Dinwiddie of Warrensburg, nieces Elise Niemeyer Barry (Willard), Lees Summit, MO and Erin M. Niemeyer, Lees Summit, MO, Debra Voss (Fred), Slidell, LA, Anita Dinwiddie, Wylie, Texas, and nephew, Glen Dinwiddie (Debbie), Kenner, LA, great-nieces and great-nephews Lucas and Lance Barry, Victor and Brandi Voss, Ben Aiken, Rebecca Aiken Brunner (Eric), Christina Swicegood (Andrew), and Greg Dinwiddie (Fe) as well as two great-great nieces and one great-great nephew. She is also survived by one step-son, Raymond Derrington, Bell Buckle, TN and two step-grandchildren, John Derrington (Destiny Womack) and Anna Derrington Walker(Will), Nashville, TN.
Visitation will be at McEvoy Funeral Home, Paris, TN, on May 23, 2024 at 1 p.m. Her memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. with Bro. Rex Buford to officiate. Named as pallbearers are Lucas Barry, Lane Barry, Raymond Derrington, John Derrington, Roger Burke, and Dennis McClure. Burial will take place in Palestine Cemetery immediately thereafter.
