Paris resident, Sandra Joy Burgess, 71, passed away Sunday May 10, 2009 at her residence. Born December 11, 1937 in Kalamazoo, MI, she was the daughter of Edwin and Mildred Ayers Trevena, now both deceased. Mrs. Burgess was a graduate of South Wayne High School , MI, attended Western Michigan University and graduated in 1962 from Argubrite Business College in Battle Creek, MI. She served on the Board of Directors of Eastern Nebraska Christian College 1970-1972. She was married March 8, 1963 in Lansing, MI to David E. Burgess, former president of Burgess Seed & Plant Co, Galesburg, MI. Mr. Burgess passed away April 1, 2001. She was actively involved in numerous animal projects from 1979-2003. She served as secretary of P.A.W.S. in Carlsbad, NM; served as first executive director of the Humane Society, Cottonwood, AZ from 1986-1988; founded the no-kill shelter Valley Dale Animal Haven, Clarkdale, AZ from 1989-1997 and owned King of the Mountain boarding kennel and pet cremation service in Show Low, AZ from 1997-2003. She moved to Paris in October 2003. She leaves a step-daughter Myrna Jean Burgess Johnson, Kalamazoo, MI, one sister; Janet Elaine Kershner, Galesburg, MI, two brothers; Edwin Trevena, Kalamazoo, MI and Irvin Trevena, Hesperia, CA, one step-sister; Mary Kovach, five grandchildren; Mark and Michael Johnson, Marsha Dillon, Marian Clough and Margaret Tesar, eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, preceded by a step-brother; Thomas Aungst and a step-sister; Una Preussel. Cremation was scheduled. A memorial service is planned later in Kalamazoo, MI, Riverside Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Forever Friends Animal Sanctuary P.O.
