VIRGINIA DORTHEAL FITCHPATRICK PAYNE On November 6, 2013, Virginia Dortheal Fitchpatrick Payne went to be with Jesus, her Lord & Savior. She was born at home on November 19, 1923, below Big Sandy, Tennessee, to Charles Robert & Edna Lee Pierce Fitchpatrick. After TVA flooded their home, they moved to Henry County. She married her lifelong sweetheart, Bernard Edmond Payne, on February 2, 1946, a day or so after he returned from the war. They bought & settled on the family farm in Palestine Community where they remained except for a couple of short stints in Ohio & Michigan in the early days. She lived a long good life of service to her Lord & to her church, family, & community. A reserved & unpretentious person with quiet strength, she was more comfortable serving in the background. Many remember the countless cakes, dressing, fried pies, & such that she prepared for Helping Hands & the hundreds of cookies she baked for VBS. She loved cooking for her family, church pot-luck dinners, & for the frequent guests in their home. She served on the first Helping Hands Board & was the 1998 Henry County Family & Community Education Club Volunteer of the Year. She volunteered in the Henry County Fair canning booth for many years. She was active in the Palestine Community Club & Palestine Homemakers. She gave her heart to Jesus in August 1986 &was a member of Union Friendship Baptist Church where she took over Bernards role of treasurer after his death. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Robert C. (Moline) Fitchpatrick, & half-brother Chester Grathwell. She is survived by her daughters, Cathy Payne (Bob) Drewry of Fort Worth, Texas, & Barbara Payne (Artie) Rivers of Savannah, Tennessee. She is Granny to her 6 grandchildren, Tony Drewry; Andrew (Tiffany) Drewry; & Kimberly Drewry (John) Whiteside all of Fort Worth, Texas; Jennifer Rivers (Brian) Baird of Clarkton, Missouri; Christie Rivers (Clay) Elliott of Jackson; & Ben (Magen) Rivers of Savannah, Tennessee; & 12 great-grandchildren, Pierce, Will, Parker, & Lola Whiteside, Sierra Drewry, & Ivy, Lindy, & Glory Drewry all of Fort Worth, Lauren & Logan Baird of Clarkton, & Molly & Nora Rivers of Savannah. She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Peggy Payne Wade & Alene Payne of Big Sandy & a host of nieces & nephews & their families. Visitation will be at McEvoy Funeral Home from 5:00 to 8:00 on Friday, November 8. Services will be at McEvoys at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 9 with Rev. Tom Winchester & Rev. Artie Rivers officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery outside of Big Sandy.
